Field Investigations

Our field investigations to collect first-hand data complement the detailed desktop research and analysis we undertake here at HCEC of environmental issues affecting our region.

Field investigations have played a big role in the campaign to clean up coal-ash waste, and the campaign team and volunteers led by Senior Researcher, Paul Winn have spent hours in the field collecting water and sediment samples at key sites in Lake Macquarie, the Central Hunter Valley and Lithgow.

This work has contributed to the community and regulators understanding of the impacts of pollutants from coal-fired power stations on our waterways and aquatic ecosystems.

The results of our investigations are published in both Out of the Ashes reports.

In 2021, we will release the results of our most recent investigation into metal bioaccumulation in birds.

We are planning to get back into the field in 2021 to collect more data! Get in touch if you’d like to learn more and join us in the field.
