You may not have noticed it yet, but the Hunter coal industry is on its way out. Yep, they're still shipping record volumes out of Newcastle, and they're still even trying to get new mines approved. But it's not making any money, and it's unlikely it ever will again. The big players like Rio Tinto and Anglo American are quietly selling their Hunter assets to unwary dreamers like Nathan Tinkler and No Hope, readying to abandon our void-pocked valley and run off with the billions in profits they made during the good times, leaving us long-suffering, particulate-breathing chumps to clean up their mess for the next few hundred years or so.
But we're hip to their game, and they're not going to get away with it. The Hunter Community Environment Centre's coal action group is making plans for 2016 – to confront the the waning coal industry which has caused so much damage to our region, and to the world's climate. We want to stop any further growth of this dead-end industry in our valley, and fight for a fair transition for the Hunter to a sustainable post-coal economy.
Come join us on 27th February as we down a few beers for a good cause, get loose on the dance floor, and raise a toast to the End of Coal.
